Albany Bulb
Source-check coverage: 14/17 fields. Dates describe source checks, not whole-card verification.
Nellie’s editorial rating: 5/5 · subjective
A former dump that became an outdoor gallery, complete with a castle, a labyrinth and driftwood murals — and the ground under your feet is the landfill.
Story
A construction-debris landfill until 1984, the Bulb is now a city park that never quite got the memo. Footpaths wander between slabs of broken concrete, past driftwood murals, a labyrinth and Mad Mark's Castle — a rebar-and-plaster shelter facing the Golden Gate. The city cleared the people who had built homes out here in 1999, and again in 2013–14. What's left is their art, weathering slowly in the salt air.

Nellie’s editorial rating: 4/5 · subjective
A 1923 Italianate water staircase that spent decades buried, with the bowls still in place; current water operation is unverified.
Story
In 1923 Oakland built itself a small piece of Italy: a 250-foot ornamental stairway above Lake Merritt, with water spilling down more than twenty concrete bowls, lit in colour at night. The lights went out in the 1950s, the bowls filled with dirt, and for decades it was just an unusually grand set of stairs. Neighbours dug the cascade out in 2004 and have been restoring it since. The bowls are still there; the water has been described as dry for decades, and whether it runs today is unverified.

Nellie’s editorial rating: 3/5 · subjective
A city block that is a staircase and a rose garden, designed by Maybeck as a commute route — charming more than strange, but genuinely odd urban form.
Story
Rose Walk is one block of Berkeley that is a garden path instead of a street. The Hillside Club raised the money in 1909, Bernard Maybeck donated the design, and it was completed in 1913 — concrete, 'bordered with hedges of roses and decorative trees.' The pink-stucco double stairway and the cottages around it came after the 1923 fire, and the city made it a landmark in 1975. Berkeley has 126 named paths and stairways; this is the one to show a visitor.

A little neighborhood park built around a hard, pale lava outcrop: part geology lesson, part stone staircase, part beginner climbing spot.
Story
A small Northbrae park preserves a patch of rhyolite lava—pale, banded rock that cooled into a remarkably hard outcrop. Berkeley lists it for early-level climbing; the city’s stone steps climb to viewpoints, making this tiny park feel like a geological stage set.

A tucked-away forest amphitheater where the woods, rather than a lobby, are the approach to the show.

A whole, purpose-built storybook world for little kids—old enough to have helped inspire the theme-park idea itself.
Story
Fairyland opened on Lake Merritt in 1950 as the country’s first storybook theme park: a place built specifically for young children, with storybook sets, puppet shows, animals and rides. Its origin story is unusually literal—Arthur Navlet imagined a whole park where children could step inside a fairy tale.
